Transformer of the Month: Natalie Moore

Transformer of the Month: Natalie Moore

Before & After! This warrior worked out at The Studio (MDR) all summer with a broken foot. Yep, you read that right. Not only was her doctor amazed at how quickly she healed, but everyone is also blown away by how fit she looks! Here’s her story of transformation …

How’d you find (MDR)?

I had heard about The Studio (MDR) after some of my girlfriends had been going and raved about the classes and instructors and let’s be real, they started to look better than ever. I had been in a workout rut, jogging and not really doing much strength training. I took my first class in June 2012 with Jessi, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I had tried other Lagree Method/SPX studios in the area but they never kept my interest. At (MDR), the classes, instructors, gorgeous hot pink studio,15 megaformers or the fact that the owner, Lisa, made it a point to introduce herself to me during my first week in class all played a part in me being obsessed with The Studio (MDR). I love the atmosphere and the vibe -- and did I mention the glitter wallpaper?! Love. Also, it’s one of the most difficult workouts I’ve ever tried.

You’ve been working out with a broken foot! Tell us about that …

I had been taking class at The Studio (MDR) for just over a year when I broke my foot (the 3rd and 4th metatarsal). I was devastated. I had been training for an upcoming half marathon and knew that I wouldn’t be able to do the run.  After leaving the orthopedic surgeon’s office on crutches and in a CAM Boot, I couldn’t stop crying knowing that I wouldn’t be able to work out. My doctor had said I absolutely was not allowed to put weight on the broken foot and that I'd be out of commission for about 3-4 months. After about 2 weeks of icing and elevating my foot, I was not only feeling lazy (more like a water-buffalo), but mentally I was going crazy. I had never gone more than 3 days without exercise, so this was torture. I emailed Lisa and explained my situation, and she immediately emailed me back saying that they would allow me to come to classes and would modify any weight bearing moves for me. To say I was ecstatic would be an understatement! My first class back I came in on crutches, rocking that big black boot, grumpy and feeling very sorry for myself. They taught the class but would give me a modification if I couldn’t do the move. I did everything on my knees and crutched out of there dripping sweat and happy for the first time in weeks. Quickly, I began to get stronger and was even doing planks and pushups on one foot.  The Studio (MDR) was and still is my happy place.

I ended up on crutches for 9 weeks, and then I had the cast/boot on for a total of 13 weeks.  I never had issues w/underarm pain like a lot of people do with crutches, and I think that has a lot to do with MDR's kick-ass classes building up my upper body strength. I got guns now! My doctor was amazed at my fast recovery (he never knew I took class) and I owe that to  The Studio (MDR). I truly believe MDR healed my foot!

What has been a breakthrough moment for you?

After my boot came off, an instructor mentioned focus in one class. I then began to really concentrate on my breathing and focus on perfecting my form. I think this has made a huge difference. Of course I zone out and think about my job, laundry or whatever I have to do later, but the goal is to focus on doing the work in the class. The result has been an almost 10-pound weight loss, most of which has happened since I broke my foot. I feel strong and more confident. I am also running again and wearing heels! This past Monday, I was bummed that I had to go on a work trip and was going to miss the 8-minute plank … so I got up super early and did an 8-min plank on my own at 4:30 a.m. prior to catching my flight.  While at my sales meeting this week my co-workers, most of whom I hadn’t seen me since last January, all commented that I’d lost weight and looked very fit.

What’s in store for you in 2014?

Not only is my butt smaller now, but I feel so strong -- both physically and emotionally. I can’t wait to get that first half-marathon on the books for 2014.  I cannot fully verbalize how grateful and thankful I am for Lisa, Jessi and the rest of the team at The Studio (MDR). I really do think that I never would have gotten such a positive outcome following my injury if I hadn't been training at The Studio (MDR). My life is so much fuller because I’m working out here.

Get Perty: Lisa’s Top Beauty Picks Right Now

No time to shower after your (MDR) workout? No problem -- as long as you’ve got a few of Lisa’s favorite beauty products stashed in your gym bag! When it comes to beauty, my biggest mantra is that less is more. Don’t get me wrong -- I am ALL about the glitz and glamour when we’re talking about clothes, shoes, and handbags. But I love beauty products that are natural looking and low-maintenance -- especially because I am always on the go and usually coming straight from The Studio (MDR). Here are a few of my current faves:

Anthelios Daily Moisturizer Cream SPF 15

anthelios_15

Whenever someone tells you to wear sunscreen daily, listen! They’re not just saying it to be annoying. Applying sunscreen to your face every day, especially in sunny California, is my not-so-secret way of trying to prevent wrinkles and keeping my skin soft. I swear by Anthelios Daily Moisturizer Cream. It’s thin and easy enough to apply on my face without the fear that the moisturizer might clog my pores, plus you can put some makeup over it without it looking caked-on.

Yves Saint Laurent Volume Effect Faux Cils Mascara

YSL Mascara

I have been blessed with super-duper long eyelashes (thanks Mom!), and I try to enhance them by using this mascara.

Dr. Jart Beauty Balm

Dr. Jart Beauty Balm

This one-step balm is made of all-natural ingredients, and it hides most unwanted imperfections. I trust this product with my life (okay that is a lil’ dramatic but…it’s good!). I’ve ordered so many from Sephora that they have made me a VIB member!

Chanel Lip gloss Levres Scintillantes 03- Glaze

Chanel Lipgloss

Sometimes I think that red lipstick can make you older -- like you’re trying to come to the party with all of your big sister’s friends. I steer clear of the rich reds on my lips and go for this light pink, shimmer gloss instead. It dresses up every outfit -- especially my workout clothes!

Tom Ford Flamingo Lipstick

Tom Ford Lipstick

A friend of mine forced me to try on Tom Ford's lip color in Flamingo because I tend to shy away from color and I fell instantly in love!  Maybe I’m a sucker for pink (ahem…just take a look up at our hot pink ceiling at The Studio (MDR)!) but what can I say, everything Tom Ford does turns to platinum.

Tom Ford- Jasmin Rouge Parfume

TF perfume

I am cheating on my beloved Chanel Allure that I have been wearing since the beginning of time with Tom Ford parfume in Jasmin Rouge. All of his scents smell differently on each person so you really have to go spend some time with a specialist to find which is right for you, but worth the time and well worth the cost as this lil’ bottle is a bit on the pricey side.  Dab some on after class and you walk out smelling like a queen.

A Letter from Lisa

LisaThe Studio (MDR)’s fearless leader, Lisa Hirsch, talks about the art of letting go, and how doing so is the key to capturing and creating a life that gives you the best shot at becoming your happiest you.  It's a brand new year and The Studio (MDR)’s 3rd birthday. Is it just me, or did 2014 burst onto the scene with enormous positive energy and a great deal of promise?!

When I think about all of the exciting things that are in store for all of us this year, the topic of letting go – and the difficulties in doing so – also comes up. Whether it is a bad habit, social media, an ex-lover, or a friend who no longer enhances your life, it can be so very hard to remove ourselves from these attachments -- even when we know they are no longer good for us. Why is this?

What I have learned is that holding on to someone or something that no longer fulfills us cannot act as a substitute for our inner emptiness. It may be one of the hardest lessons to learn, but we have to try to "let go" of what has become stale and unfulfilling in our lives and work on filling that void with something more pleasing and better suited for who we are. Only then can we make room for the right lover, friend, hobby, etc. to enter our lives in order to succeed in capturing and creating a life that will result in our happiest selves.

So, spend some time thinking about what you need to let go of to help you become a happier, healthier, and more mentally fit person. It may be something very small, or it may be something quite vast and overwhelming. If that’s the case, don't overwhelm yourself and make a change suddenly or all at once. Instead, take a step forward today and plan on how you are going to begin to let go slowly, step by step. Even taking that small step will empower you to move forward to towards your goal of letting go even more.

Life should not be a personal prison; it is meant to be lived to its fullest and can be re-started at ANY age. There are many chapters in our lives, some more rewarding than others. Sometimes we just need a quick reboot to allow new and better experiences to take focus, enabling us to be receptive to things we never dreamed were possible. So, my friends, let's take steps towards creating new and better chapters -- and let us do so together. As always, if you need an ear, I am here.

A big hug and kiss to each of you. Here's to a very special and strong 2014!

My Weekly Workout Log: Lindsay

Lindsay HallamWant to know what other workouts will best enhance the classes you’re taking at The Studio (MDR)? Each month, we’ll be highlighting our trainers’ exercise logs so we can see what they do to stay looking so fit. Get ready to get inspired by Lindsay’s routine …

MONDAY - JANUARY 6th - The Studio (MDR)

First class back from holiday break and WHOA! This was the longest break I've taken since I started at The Studio (MDR) and I was feeling the burn!! I'm always glad to get back into my routine after leaving town. It's still hard for me to stay on track when I'm out of my element.

TUESDAY - JANUARY 7th - Rest

I practice what I preach and take a rest day after my (MDR) classes. It's important to rest so your muscles repair, heal and get stronger. When I first started working out at the studio years ago, I came everyday and wasn't noticing any change in my body. It wasn't until I started adding rest days that I started seeing results.

WEDNESDAY JANUARY 8th - The Studio (MDR)

Still sore from Monday but felt great after class!

THURSDAY - JANUARY 9th - Run

Normally I would take a rest day, but after indulging a little over the holidays, I'm adding some light cardio to whip myself back into shape. A light cardio based activity on a "rest day" from The Studio (MDR) helps to maintain metabolism and continue to burn fat. Since the rest of the country is experiencing the polar vortex, I thought I would take advantage of the SoCal sun and I went for a light run through the Venice canals.

FRIDAY - JANUARY 10th - The Studio (MDR)

Friday FUNday at The Studio (MDR)! It’s always a great, high-intensity class at (MDR) on Fridays. It's my favorite day to workout. This class REALLY challenged me and I was soaked by the end!

SATURDAY - JANUARY 11th - The Santa Monica Stairs

My first time ever doing the Santa Monica Stairs! I went down and my first thought was, "This is it?" I thought it was going to be a cakewalk. I was wrong. VERY, very wrong. I decided to see how many times I could make it up and down in ten minutes for a quick, light workout. I survived three rounds and had to use the railing as leverage to get myself back up the last few steps. My jello legs barely allowed me the short walk back to my car and I'm not 100% sure I was safe to drive because my leg shook the entire way home!

SUNDAY - JANUARY 12th - Golf Range With Friends

I didn't realize how much I would enjoy this but it turns out there is a lot of satisfaction that comes from whacking golf balls. I went to the golf range in Westchester with a few friends and we had a blast! My legs were still SO sore from class on Friday and the stairs yesterday, but fortunately you stand pretty still when you hit golf balls at the range. :)

Trainer Bake-Off: Healthy Chili

Screen Shot 2014-01-21 at 11.42.34 AMWinter is the perfect time to make a big pot of chili, which is why we asked The Studio (MDR)’s trainers and founder to share their favorite recipes. Which one is your fave?

Lindsay’s Anything-Goes Chili

This is my go-to recipe when I want something hearty and healthy. I love chili because it is so versatile, cheap, and easy. Pretty much anything goes, and it only gets better day after day as all the flavors meld together!

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 2 cups chopped onions
  • salt to taste
  • cayenne pepper to taste
  • 2 pounds grassfed stew meat
  • 1 tbl chili powder
  • 2 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • 2 tbl chopped garlic
  • 3 cups crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 2 cups organic beefstock

Directions:

In a large saucepan, heat the canola oil. When the oil is hot, add the onions and saute for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the vegetables start to wilt. Season with salt and cayenne. Stir in the stew meat, chili powder, cumin, crushed red pepper, and oregano. Brown the meat for 5 to 6 minutes. Stir in the garlic, tomatoes, tomato paste, and beef stock.. Bring the liquid up to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Simmer the liquid, uncovered for 1 hour, stirring occasionally, or until the beef is tender. Skim off the fat occasionally. Re-season with salt and cayenne.

Dana’s Veggie Chili

Here's my favorite chili recipe, which I’ve adapted from the Whole Foods website. I love it because it’s healthy and filing all at the same time. Plus, it has a spicy kick. I love spicy! And the heat helps rev up the metabolism!

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 large carrot, chopped
  • 1 stalk celery, chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, seeded and chopped
  • 1 medium red bell pepper , cored, seeded and chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic,  finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped chipotles in adobo
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes, with their liquid
  • 3 cups cooked red kidney beans, drained
  • 1 1/2 cup cooked black beans, drained 1 tablespoon dried oregano

Directions:

Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add onions, carrots, celery, peppers and garlic and cook for 10 to 12 minutes, until vegetables are softened but not browned. Add chipotles, oregano, cumin, chili powder and salt. Stir to blend. Add tomatoes and 4 cups water. Gently simmer over low heat, uncovered, for 45 minutes. Add beans and simmer an additional 30 minutes. Garnish individual bowls with green onions or sour cream, if desired.

Lisa’s Turkey Chili

I’m on a mission to cook more in 2014, and chili is a great dish for beginners like me! A friend passed along this recipe and I love it. It’s hearty and healthy at the same time, and the perfect protein-packed lunch or dinner to have after a workout at The Studio (MDR).

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup prechopped red onion
  • 1/3 cup chopped seeded poblano pepper (about 1)
  • 1 teaspoon bottled minced garlic
  • 1 1/4 pounds ground turkey
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 (19-ounce) can cannellini beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 (14-ounce) can fat-free, lower-sodium chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 6 lime wedges

Directions:

Heat a large saucepan over medium heat. Add first 4 ingredients; cook for 6 minutes or until turkey is done, stirring frequently to crumble. Stir in chili powder and next 8 ingredients (through broth); bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes. Stir in cilantro. Serve with lime wedges.

The Healing Soup You Need to Make Tonight (and Throughout the Holidays!)

SoupThe Studio (MDR)’s healthy-eats recipe blogger, Arielle Ramos, shares the healing soup that’s the perfect antidote to all of the extra sugar you’re eating this time of year Food has the power to heal, a concept that is close to my heart, as a graduate of the Chef’s Training Program at The Natural Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts. During my year of culinary study I learned about the expansive and contractive property of foods, or the yin and yang, if you will. Ever notice when you drink wine, or eat a bunch of sugar you feel “spaced out?” Or when you eat a lot of cheese or red meat you feel tight and lethargic. In the culinary world I use this macrobiotic principle to determine which whole foods to prepare for a balancing meal.

During Cakes and Pies month at The Natural Gourmet Institute, my entire class fell wildly out of balance. We tasted everything we made which meant eating sugar for almost every meal of the day in large quantities. During that month it was a challenge for all of us to stay intellectually focused despite starches and sugars as our mind’s only fuel. That’s where this miso soup comes in. I was first introduced to this recipe on a particularly sugar infused day, where we had to convert cookies from their original recipes to healthier versions. Making a big pot of this Asian elixir was an integral part of the class.  It was the chosen antidote to expansive, acid-forming sugar and flour.

A bowl of alkalizing miso soup, chock-full of vegetables, live with digestive enzymes and rich in minerals from seaweed, is the perfect balance for a sugar high. When I ate it, I could actually feel myself “come down” almost immediately and re-focus on the task at hand.

Now I didn’t invent miso soup – and I didn’t even re-invent it. This recipe is one of my fondest from my instructor at culinary school because of how it worked its magic, soothing my sugar-induced nausea and confusion. So in sharing one of my favorite recipes with you, I hope you will use it during your own holiday bake-a-thons, gingerbread frosting ceremonies, Chrismakuh dinners and the like, to rebalance the overly expansive property sugar consequently has on our systems. This recipe is incredibly easy and delicious, and should take under 45 minutes to make.

Healing Miso Soup

Serves 6-8

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil (NOT toasted)
  • 1 onion, sauté slice
  • 1 carrot, matchstick
  • 2 ribs (pieces) celery, diagonal slice
  • 8-10 shitake mushrooms, sliced
  • 6 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • 1 piece of kombu
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup wakame, soaked 15 minutes and drained
  • ¼ cup arame, soaked 15 minutes and drained
  • ½ lb. tofu, diced
  • 2 quarts (8 cups) water
  • Ginger juice to taste
  • Lemon juice, to taste
  • 1 cup (or more) miso of choice
  • Scallions, sliced, for garnish

Directions:

1. Heat oil in a 3-quart pot. Add onions, carrots, celery, shitakes, garlic, kombu, and salt. Sweat for approximately 15 minutes on low heat, covered.

2. Add wakame, arame, and tofu. Continue to sweat for another 10 minutes.

3. Add water, bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer for another 15 minutes. Turn off heat. Let broth stand for 5-10 minutes. Add ginger and lemon juice.

4. Temper miso mixing with 2 cups of the broth. Add tempered miso back into the soup. Serve, garnished with scallions.

*kombu, wakame, and arame are all sea veggies you can find in any Asian Market or the Asian section of your local Whole Foods.

This soup reminds me of a simple, profound truth: whole foods have a power to restore balance, to heal – if we know how to use them. As a chef and NGI grad, just ask me how to cure an upset stomach, nausea, bloating, a headache, a hangover, insomnia, a sugar binge, and I can give you an effective food remedy. Food and healing – it’s my thing.

Wishing everyone a very happy and healthy holiday.

Love,

Arielle

Shopping with Lisa

Last month, we brought you Lisa’s favorite healthy eats in Venice (plus her go-to orders). Now, Lisa reveals her current shopping splurges. Think of it as the last-minute holiday gift guide you’ve been looking for. Okay, I admit, I have tiny shopping problem, and I have become addicted mostly to online shopping since I spend most of my time working. While some may say it’s a little indulgent, I take no shame in saying that it is important to me to feel good in what I am wearing, whether it’s my workout clothing or what I wear to dinner (and sometimes they are one in the same!). Here’s a little peek at the fun stuff I couldn’t resist this month. The best part? Most of these items are available at The Studio (MDR), so it's one-stop shopping!

UnknownThe Neshama Project.  Ever since I met Rachelle Tratt, the creator and designer of the Neshama Project, these little hamsa necklaces have been one of my every day “have to put on” pieces. The eye catching opal stone hung on a delicate chain dresses up every outfit, from what I wear when I’m walking the dogs to the long dresses I love wearing in the evening. This is a piece I continuously get compliments on and love to wear at all times. The hamsa is supposed to bring peace, and I like to think it has definitely helped me stay sane throughout my crazy-busy days. Plus when you buy one, 10% of all proceeds support one of The Neshama Project's partner charities that you get to choose at check out if you buy on Rachelle’s site.

ShoppingShine on Sierra Leone Shine on Sierra Leone is a charity started by Tiffany Persons in an effort to support Sierra Leone. The money donated helps the people there maintain self-sustaining businesses that benefit and provide sufficient profits for the local communities. This winter at The Studio (MDR), we’re selling hand-woven scarves and 100% of the proceeds will go to this organization, which will give all of the money directly to a Sierra Leone girls’ school. I am in love with the colors in these scarves, especially rich reds and deep blues. Their original style, warm muffler like quality, and giving-back sentiment have me buying 100!  Show your support and buy at least one!

Beyond Yoga & Michi When I am getting ready for a day at The Studio (MDR), I always throw on some of the Beyond Yoga Collection. This winter I have been wearing the super-warm long leggings in both plum wine and teal. Not only is the fabric so soft, the leggings aren’t see-through and they’re so warm! Plus, the earth tones warm up my look when I put on my black puffer. Another MUST this winter are the MICHI Luna leggings that we sell at The Studio (MDR)! They are so fabulous! I saw one of our clients wearing them and I raced online to purchase them for the studio. They are the perfect blend of unique and sexy. I may even wear them out later.

05666_PK5706J-Crew When I’m looking to have a fun night out with my friends, I wear these gold J-crew shoes. They go with everything and anything and always put me in a party mood!

BKR Water Bottle Drinking enough water has always been a challenge for me, but having my heart BKR bottle helps me remember to down my H2O. I love the BKR water bottle in storm with the pink heart.

Garmin Watch I don’t run, but maybe I will now with this watch!

Commando Tights Staying warm can be tricky, even in sunny California. I am in LOVE with these commando tights. They have a Spanx-like quality but aren’t too thick. Everyone needs a million pairs.

largePaleta Shopping for food is one of my most neglected activities, and that is why I LOVE Paleta meals. Shopping on Paleta is super easy; I tell them my dietary restrictions, what I like and don’t like, and they somehow always send me EXACTLY what I want.

SHOES! Its always high bootie season for me (and I mean that in regards to The Studio (MDR) as well as my feet – ha!) and Minnetonkas have never gone out of style!

Jo Malone I am totally a sucker for anything that smells delicious… especially when it's Jo Malone nectarine fragrance. Smells like heaven.

longchamp-tote-bagLongchamp

If it’s monogrammed, it has my name on it. Literally.  I love anything and everything that is personalized. Napkins, towels, handbags … Longchamp totes. They make great gifts … hint hint!

A Love Note from Lisa

LisaLisa Hirsch reflects on another amazing year at the sanctuary that is The Studio (MDR) … Holiday lights are coming up everywhere, especially here in The Studio (MDR)! We don’t need to hang the holiday sparklers because we have so many shining stars and bright lights in all of YOU, our amazing clients and friends! Many of our clients are getting ready for their weddings, preparing to head out of town on holiday, and enjoying the rush of last-minute shopping for their families or that new special someone in their life. All I know is that there’s a LOT more of that “special something” going on in the air this year!

This is the month where we indulge in the good life, toast to celebratory happenings, share extraordinary holiday meals with family and friends, and start to think about resolutions. As many of you have heard us say before at (MDR), our resolutions always commence early so that we are already ahead of the game! Our clients are incredible in their determination to do whatever it takes to maintain a healthy body and an active, fit mind. That explains why I am seeing so many happy and healthy people walk through these doors. Even when I catch someone who is going through an unexpected rough time, it seems they have the tools readily available around them to fight as hard as they can to face (and conquer!) whatever challenges they face.

We have a client who lost her husband this year at a young age and she keeps coming to The Studio (MDR) because it has helped her to "keep going" and has become her sanctuary. Every day I watch people walk through these doors who are facing all kinds of ailments, from injuries to cancer, and I can’t help but admire them each time they get through a class and walk out with big smiles. These clients epitomize the value of healthy inner strength and a genuine belief in oneself – that nothing in one’s life can be so bad that one cannot overcome it in some way. We all experience blips in life as well as the highs (and here’s hoping we all experience more highs than blips!). I hope that you view The Studio (MDR) as a safe haven – a place where all of you can enter at any moment in time, no matter what you are feeling, and just be you. That is why we created this space. Not just to provide the most incredible workout, but to make it a fun, safe space that you truly love. It was always my goal to make The Studio (MDR) a place that would give you the confidence necessary to succeed in life.

As we approach the end of 2013, I want to sincerely thank my friends, family, and clients for helping to make this the best three years of my life. Thank you for helping me to build the most satisfying, most fulfilling career of my life. In fact, it really isn't a career; it's my world and my sanctuary, and I am grateful for the role that each of you have played in allowing me to blossom into the woman I truly am. I am beyond grateful for the trust that you have placed in me to allow me to provide the best workout possible with your best interests in mind.

Love to you all and Happy New Year!

Big hug,

Lisa

Tastemaker of the Month: Talitha Peters, CCO of Sole Society

Considering The Studio (MDR) is the premiere fitness studio in Los Angeles, it comes as no surprise that it’s filled with some pretty spectacular clients. Here’s a spotlight on one and a little bit about what she does … as well as 5 things that are rockin’ her world right now.

Talitha Peters is the Chief Creative Officer at Sole Society, a brand of shoes, bags and accessories sold at SoleSociety.com and Nordstrom. She’s been in the online/fashion business for years, and loves what she does at Sole Society because she gets to be creative and business oriented at the same time. Talitha’s also the mom of two little girls, Frankie and Esme (ages 1 and 4) who keep her very busy (and tired!). Two months ago, Talitha took her first class at The Studio (MDR) thanks to her friend, Katie Johnson. “We moved from Santa Monica to Westchester and I was very concerned about where I was going to exercise. I had been doing yoga and spin for years but had never tried any kind of pilates-based workout before. My first class (with Jessi, love her!) was a very humbling experience. I never felt so out of shape in all my life. Now, I am hooked!”

Here are 5 little picks she’s also hooked on right now:

  • Booties! I have a bootie collection that is kind of ridiculous. Sole Society has some amazing booties for fall. A staple bootie with a skinny denim jean and a blazer is sort of my daily uniform at work. Throw in a vintage tee, a statement necklace, and an always messy topknot -- no time for a blowdryer. That’s me in a nutshell.
  • Essie ballet slippers nail polish. It's an oldie but a goodie.
  • Kreation Juicery’s green dream smoothie. I am creature of habit and love the green dream smoothie. I'd drink it daily if I had one close to me. Does that sound super LA? :)
  • Exercise gear from Carbon 38. They have some super-cool pants to workout in. I like the printed pants to shake things up while exercising.
  • St.Tropez tanning spray. I literally just sprayed my face and legs and feel renewed.

What’s Healthier: Peanut Butter or Almond Butter?

ButterAlways reach for almond butter because you assume it’s the healthier pick? Not so fast, say nutritionists. Here’s what you need to know about these popular nut butters so you can make a more informed choice

When we read this article that broke down the nutritional benefits of almond butter vs. peanut butter, we put down our almond butter and banana sandwiches. Not because almond butter isn’t a healthy staple of a well-rounded diet (rejoice! it is!), but because peanut butter – that nut butter we’ve shunned ever since we heard of the virtues of almond butter – isn’t as bad for us as we were led to believe.

In fact, according to Christian Henderson, MS, RD, the dietitian quoted in this article, almond and peanut butter are kind of like fraternal twins. "You can see a gram difference [in carbs, protein, and fat] here or there, but it doesn't really make a difference," she said.

So, now that we’ll be reaching for this good ‘ol childhood fave again, what’s important to keep in mind?

  1. Skip the Skippy. Peanut butter can be loaded with added sugar, so if you’re going to buy a jar, make sure the only ingredient on the back of the label is peanuts.
  2. Always opt for organic. Peanuts – like soybeans and corn – are overgrown and overprocessed in our country, noted Henderson, and they’re hard to grow. (Translation: They’re heavily sprayed with pesticides.) That’s why choosing an organic brand is crucial.
  3. Don’t go overboard. Interestingly, Henderson said almond butter tends to be better than peanut butter at helping her clients with weight loss. That’s because almonds tend to be more filling, and peanuts tend to be more addictive. So if you’re going to go for the PB&J, just make sure you keep your portion size in check.

Where Lisa Eats (+ What She Orders!)

Lisa at Zinque

Given how fit she is, you might not guess that Lisa Hirsch is a total foodie. Here’s what she orders at her favorite restaurants around town … and the café that actually named a dish after her!

I am confident enough to admit to the world that I do not cook. I wish I did, because I actually think I would enjoy it. Plus, I know how therapeutic it can be. But -- and I know this is a sad excuse -- I just can’t seem to find the time lately. I know that by not cooking for myself, I lose out on some of the major benefits that come along with preparing your own meals, like knowing exactly what’s in your food, not consuming any extra oils or salt, and having the satisfaction of eating something that YOU lovingly prepared.

Since I’m a total foodie and love to go out to eat, I’ve realized I have to be hyper-aware of how my food is prepared. I can sometimes be so specific, that I create my own dish (and the restaurant even names it after me!). Exhibit A:

Canali Cafe

“The Lisa Special” Yes, there is now a dish called “The Lisa Special” named after me and in their computer system and everything. It’s grilled chicken in a spicy tomato arbiatta sauce with spinach and artichokes, all chopped up together. NO salt, NO added oil, and NO butter.  Sometimes when I am feeling naughty, I will sprinkle some parmesan over it, though I have been trying to stay away from dairy because it can be inflammatory. I love Italian food, and this is my absolute favorite meal to order for lunch, especially after a great workout at The Studio (MDR).

Hama

This is one of my favorite local spots to grab dinner.  I love sitting at their bar for Happy Hour. Many of the girls that work there are clients, so it is warm and inviting. The kind of place where everyone knows your name!

My go-to order: Steamed Shrimp Dumplings (no green onions) with Ponzu sauce and the Spicy Tuna Handroll wrapped in soy paper, no scallions. And of course a hot cup of green tea, which stimulates your metabolism and boosts memory!

Oscars

When I'm going out with friends, I love to go to Oscar's.

My go-to order: La Puente Backyard Original (and yes, I order the regular burger!) with grilled mushrooms – I mean REALLY, and SUPER REALLY grilled onions -- with their extra not-so-secret sauce. It's so good. I try and leave half the bun. Salad or papas?  Which would you choose? YUM!

Zinque

This is my local coffee shop spot/wine bar spot where I feel right at home and know the menu by heart. I get super excited when any additions are made. At the sight of the new cous cous salad with chicken, I went bananas. The phase lasted for about a month where I would consistently order it without any ezra oil or salt.

However, now I’m back to my go-to snack: the tuna tartare. The tuna is super fresh here. I always ask for no chips, no salt, and very light on the oil

Salt Air

At this new hot spot on Abbot Kinney, I always order the Pan Roasted Chicken with everything -- all I ask is that they go light on the salt. When I'm feeling crazy, I order the monkey pie for dessert. It’s heaven on a plate.

I used to be worried that waiters would be upset if I asked for my food done in specific way, but now I realize it’s really important to have full control of what I consume and feel zero qualms about asking for meals the way I like them. Let me know if you try any of my faves and what you think!

A Love Note from Lisa

LisaThe Studio (MDR)'s leading lady talks about the best trend she’s seen all year: The fact that women are finally starting to love themselves and their bodies, and truly accept who they are. Let’s all take a moment and be grateful for that!

Happy November! It's here again … my favorite month of the year! Both my birthday and Thanksgiving fall in November, so I get to celebrate all month long. And yes, I take full advantage of the non-stop celebrating and have done so ever since I was a little girl! It makes me so, so happy that instead of feeling older each year, I seem to feel younger, more thankful, and closer to my goals.

One of those long-time goals is body acceptance. I think it’s something every woman has struggled with at some point in her life. And here’s an observation I’ve made over the past year: I sense that women, in general, have become more comfortable with their bodies, and WOW, that is a wonderful thing! It is clearly evident from the short shorts and skirts that everyone’s wearing around town day and night that women appear more free with their bodies. As a woman who has personally battled with weight issues and poor self image, this feat of acceptance of one’s body signifies that we are clearly doing something right in this world – even if we still have a way to go. And I like to think that The Studio (MDR) is doing its part to help the cause. I know I feel as if I’m finally getting there thanks to this community!

If you have a chance, watch this clip. It’s Robyn Lawley -- a model who’s considered “plus size” -- on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and I’m willing to bet the conversation will resonate with you.

I believe poor body image is a disease, and if everyone could take a look at themselves through the eyes of someone else, the picture would be more beautiful than you could imagine. Each and every one of us is beautiful in our own unique and special ways. Let’s take time out of our busy day and inspect our beauty from within, and look into the mirror and allow ourselves to approve of what we see.

So, happy November to you, have a wonderful Thanksgiving, and thank you for helping me feel like the luckiest girl around. I will be feeling grateful for all of you as I celebrate my birthday today, and feeling grateful for this space -- one that continues to help me truly like, accept, and even love who I am.

Big hug,

Lisa

A Fun Story About the Waitlist …

Alright, we’re going to break it down for you with a little storytelling sesh. Here goes: Sally Sue is DESPERATELY trying to get into Lindsay’s Disco Friday 8:15 p.m. class and sees “0 open.” Ugh she thinks. I want to do my standing long jump with pink lights on a Friday night! It’s like the SOHO house but so much better!

Trust us when we tell you that we want Sally Sue to come to Lindsay’s Friday club night class just as much as she does. What can Sally do to make sure she gets into her favorite class?

Sally needs to click “Sign Up Now,” even though The Studio (MDR) website reads “0 open.” The webpage links her to the wait list. “YES!” she exclaims. This has to be encouraging. She places herself on the waitlist on Monday night for Friday night’s class. The computer tells her she is  #8 on the waiting list.  Damn, she thinks, as she pets her puppy and resumes watching Orange is the New Black.

All week, Sally keeps checking the wait list, continuously taking pleasure in watching her name go up. By Thursday night she slides all the way to #2. “I just need two more people to cancel!” Sally screams at her computer.

It’s now Friday morning, the day of Sally’s beloved class, and after her first cup of coffee at 8:15 a.m. (12 hours before the class time), she still hasn’t received an email from The Studio (MDR) saying she’s made it off the waiting list. And now the wait list is closed.

Damn.

BUT wait! Sally remembers how the wait list works: 12 hours before a class begins, the wait list gets obliterated -- poof, into virtual Never Never Land. Although this sounds like the worst news ever, it’s actually GREAT news. That’s because in between 8:15 a.m. and 8:15 p.m., people are bound to cancel. (They will just get charged $15 late-cancel fee). What this means is that even though Sally used to be on the wait list, now it’s gone -- so if she wants to get into class, she needs to check The Studio (MDR) website throughout the day, looking to see if there are any spots open in Lindsay’s class.

While Sally’s at work eating lunch at her desk, she checks out the studio’s website to see if anyone’s cancelled. And she’s in luck! She see’s “1 Open” and clicks “Sign Up Now.”

And at 8:15 p.m., Sally Sue is in her Lulus, on her favorite machine at The Studio (MDR), holding standing long with lights off, Justin Timberlake’s Holy Grail blaring in the background.

The (HAPPY!) End.

Morals of the story:

1. Always use the wait list. It works! Even if you see “0 Open” when you go to sign up for class, click “Sign Up” and it’ll take you to the wait list.

2. Remember that 12 hours before the start time of the class you want to get into, the wait list CLOSES. That means spots can open up at any time throughout the day (that’ll happen when someone who’s in the class late-cancels), and you can keep checking the site to see if there are any available spots.

3. When you see an opening within 12 hours of the class you want to get into, click “SIGN UP” -- even if you used to be on the wait list.

4.Make sure you are opted in for e-mails from The Studio (MDR). These will notify you if you are taken off the wait list and placed into a class!

Meet Your New Studio (MDR) Healthy-Chef Blogger!

IMG_4805Arielle Ramos is an (MDR) addict, as well as a chef trained at The Natural Gourmet Institute for Health & Culinary Arts. Here’s the best part: She’s going to be sharing her amazing recipes -- complete with step-by-step how-tos and pictures! -- with YOU! Well hello beautiful people! What up what up. My name is Arielle Ramos and I am so excited to be your new healthy recipe blogger here at the studio MDR!

As an LA native, I have always been interested in the body-mind connection and how healthy eating can transform you, both physically and mentally.

In my early 20s, I took off to rural Malvali, India, to study philosophy at an ashram. To fulfill my “karma” duties, I worked in the kitchen and quickly learned from the other women how to create traditional chipatis, delicious daals, and fragrant curries. I fell in love with cooking, and after my time in India, I stayed very interested in plant-based eating. I went on to create and curate a vegetarian recipe and lifestyle blog, Your Vegan Girlfriend, where I focused on creating healthier versions of everyday favorites. After getting my undergraduate degree in psychology, I decided to pursue my passion for cooking professionally and attend culinary school in New York City. I completed the Chef’s Training Program at The Natural Gourmet Institute for Health & Culinary Arts, specializing in organic, seasonal, health-supportive cuisine and nutrition. After graduation, I trained with the culinary director of Real Food Daily and former head chef of Pure Food and Wine in New York City.

I recently moved back to LA and was temporarily living with my good friend Samantha. Each night, I would see my roommate come home, sweaty, smiling and talking about how “crazy” Ky’s class was. She started to get leaner and stronger and more importantly, she remained steadfast and enthusiastic about her always going to class. I wanted that! I hadn’t been to any exercise class in over a year, so making the decision to finally go to a class, knowing I was not even close to my best athletic self, took surrender. I made the jump and signed up for Lindsay’s class on a Sunday afternoon. I walked in terrified and walked out with a monthly unlimited membership. I haven’t looked back since!

I feel so lucky to be apart of such an inspiring community here at The Studio (MDR). I love meeting all of the incredible people who take and teach class, so if you see me on the megaformer next to you and you want to see a recipe for something in particular, let me know!

A Peek Inside Jessi's Fridge

Jessi's Fridge! Want to know how Jessi Piha always looks so lean and toned? Well, here’s the secret: A healthy diet! Sure, she works out hard. But she also keeps her fridge stocked with super-healthy eats. Here’s some inspiration before your next trip to Whole Foods …

I know you will all be shocked to see I have actual food in my fridge and not shelves stocked with cold-pressed juice. This girl loves food and loves to eat! Because I am on the go all day, I need to have food that’s ready to eat. Luckily, cooking relaxes me. My obsession with food began when I was working as a private chef, something I've done off and on throughout the years.

Even when I’m teaching 5 a.m. classes, I never miss breakfast! I have a shot of E3 every morning, as well as steel cut oats mixed with chia seeds and my favorite seasonal fruit.  And yes, sometimes I eat this in the car on my way to The Studio (MDR).

I like to make my own staples: butternut squash soup, baked yams, chia seed pudding, and my fave raw energy snack. (The recipe is simple: Mix oats, flax seeds, chopped walnuts, almond butter, and honey, rolled into balls and dip in shaved coconut!).

I'm never without spinach, lemons, shallots, ginger, almond milk, almond butter, apples, and dark chocolate. I make veggie salads and add protein -- meats, beans, fish, and all kinds of other lean proteins. But I'm a snob about always having fresh food, so whatever I'm feeling that day gets cooked. I don't do frozen, with one exception: If you could take a peek inside my freezer you would find frozen yogurt. I have a wicked sweet tooth, and an oatmeal cookie crumbled on top of fro yo makes me seriously happy. (Though if someone offers me a doughnut, all bets are off!)

The Studio (MDR) Helped Me … Complete My First Triathlon!

ClaireClaire John never imagined she’d compete in a triathlon. After all, swimming in the ocean used to induce tears! But taking classes at The Studio (MDR) helped her feel stronger – both mentally and physically – she finished her first tri and can’t wait to do more. I took my first class at The Studio (MDR) thanks to Alex Malloy, and I instantly fell in love with the workouts. After taking several 5:00 a.m. classes with Jessi, I could see and feel a major transformation in my body. I felt stronger and leaner, and I was inspired to do something with this newfound strength! So, having only been a runner in the past, I decided to sign up for my first triathlon, to push myself to develop new skills in cycling and swimming.

On the day of the tri, I was surprisingly calm despite the nerves I had leading up to the event. Athletes of all levels were frantically setting up their gear, stretching, running laps around the parking lot, bouncing around, talking big, and taking in their power aids, yet I remained calm. I owe a large part of that to feeling strong, training well, and my awesome cheering squad.

When I first started swimming in the ocean I would cry before every swim. Seriously. I was terrified and couldn't get past my fear. But I didn't give up and with time and patience, I finally nailed a few "no more tears" ocean swims before the triathlon. I truly feel that my Studio (MDR) workouts not only made me physically stronger, but also mentally stronger, which played a major role in my triathlon training and racing. And Jessi is a purist when it comes to form, so I definitely attribute my injury-free training to her!

I am always up for a challenge and always setting new goals, so my next goal is to beat my fastest marathon and half-marathon times. Next year, when triathlon season picks up again, I’ll aim to improve my time in the sprint distance triathlon, and I even think I’ll train for the Olympic distance as well.

I'd also like to get through JUST ONE carriage-kicking, moon-walking, heart-pumping (MDR) leg workout without having to stop, for crying out loud! :)

5 Best Halloween Candies if You’re Going to Cheat

PeepsWe know how easy it is to put your hand in the leftover Halloween candy bowl. That’s why we pulled together this list of the five healthiest Halloween candies. Stock up on these instead of the usual suspects when you do your Halloween Costco run this year! 1. Peeps Pumpkins

This quintessential Easter bunny candy is now dressing up as a pumpkin. And good thing, considering they contain very few cals and zero fat. However, it’s important to keep in mind that these little suckers are pretty much ALL sugar, so don’t go overboard.

The damage: One Peep contains 16 calories, 0 grams of fat, and 3.5 grams sugar.

2. York Peppermint Patty

This light, refreshing treat that leaves you with minty-fresh breath is a lot lower in fat and cals than other sweet treats that might tempt you this time of year.

The damage: One full-size patty contains 165 calories, 3 grams of fat, and 27 grams sugar.

3. Fun-Size 3 Musketeers Bar

Instead of chocolate bars filled with caramel and peanuts, snag a fun-size 3 Musketeers bar, which is lighter and comes in at a much lower calorie count than Snickers, Mars, and other chocolate bars.

The damage: One fun-size bar contains 63 calories, 2 grams of fat, and 11 grams sugar.

4. Tootsie Roll

While this chewy, chocolatey fix is better than a lot of other Halloween candy options, the danger is in how easy Tootsie Rolls are to pop. And at 50 cals a piece, you don’t want to plow through a handful of ‘em.

The damage: One Tootsie Roll contains 50 calories, 1 gram of fat, and 10 grams of sugar.

5. Fun-Size Peanut M&M's

If you’re looking for a quick energy boost along with your chocolate fix, this treat is where it’s at. The peanuts give you some protein, and at 90 cals a pack, you won’t totally wreck your diet if you indulge.

The damage: One fun-size packet contains 90 calories, 5 grams fat, and 9 grams sugar.

A Love Letter from Lisa

LisaThe Studio (MDR)'s leading lady talks about the power of positive thinking.

Positive thoughts …

What a difference a day, an hour, even a split second can make in one’s life. You never know what can happen -- from who you are going to meet, someone calling with good news that can change the course of your life, or turning down a certain street. Does this just happen randomly, or do we create our own destiny? Sometimes I get lost in deep thought thinking about this.

I don't know exactly why, but I do believe in the power of positive thinking and it's affect on me and the people around me. In fact, I’ve experienced first-hand how my positive thoughts have had a direct influence on the responses of those who come into my sphere. I see it, I feel it. And I often hear and use the expression, "Get out of your own way." Do our negative thoughts preclude us from experiencing the good and positive things in this world? Do we create roadblocks in life that prevent us from seeing and doing amazing things? Do we have the opportunity and the ability to change our direction?

I believe that we absolutely possess the power to do so! I believe that there is good in almost everyone. I believe that if you just start with a simple smile, the smile will seep inside and become a natural part of you. And once you allow yourself to feel beautiful from the inside, I believe life will reward you with a bevy of good things. We have to coach ourselves to avoid dwelling on what others have and avoid negative people who are destructive in nature. Instead, we need to focus on ourselves and appreciate that which we have and that which we’ve managed to accomplish in our lives, no matter how big or small.

This month, I’m urging all of us that make up this amazing Studio (MDR) community to recognize our accomplishments, because that’s what’s going to help us all strive ever harder to grab the proverbial brass ring. We have the power to create and live a life that is like a beautiful bed of roses, one that’s devoid of thorns. Once we allow ourselves to take care of "me" and learn to like who we are, then we will have the strength to reach out to help others less fortunate than ourselves.

There is a wise proverb that my family, over the generations, has ascribed to: "If I am not for myself, who will be for me?" Powerful, when you really think about it!

Here's to October, a month during which I hope all of us are able to celebrate who we truly are...

Big hug,

Lisa

A Love Letter from Lisa

LisaThe Studio (MDR)'s leading lady talks about how setbacks can help you get ahead.

Okay people, I’m just warning you … this isn't going to be a light and airy love letter, as it has been quite a challenging month for me. I watched one of my closest friends go through the death of her sister, a suicide, and it was beyond what this studio owner could fathom. All I want to do is wave a magic wand and take away the pain and suffering of this beautiful, tight-knit family that I have come to know well over the years, and bring back their beloved. Of course, I can’t do that, and it makes me feel helpless.

Helplessness is a place in which I do not function well, especially when I care so deeply about people. And just like I care about my friends and family, I hope you know that I care deeply about each and every one of you at The Studio (MDR). That’s why I believe that we have the power to help one another avoid getting to dark, vulnerable places -- places where taking one’s life appears to be the only option, where self harm, an eating disorder, anxiety, or depression becomes the norm.  I am a big believer that coming to The Studio (MDR) or doing any form of exercise, no matter where you are in the world, can be a soothing balm to sufferers of major depression, low self-esteem, and a ton of other ailments. In fact, it has been clinically proven that depression symptoms improve with exercise. According to the Mayo Clinic, exercise eases depression in a number of ways:

  • It releases feel-good brain chemicals (neurotransmitters and endorphins)
  • It reduces immune system chemicals that can worsen depression
  • It increases body temperature, which may have calming effects

Exercise has a ton of amazing psychological and emotional benefits, too. It can help you:

  • Gain confidence. Meeting exercise goals or challenges, even small ones, can boost your self-confidence. Getting in shape can also make you feel better about your appearance.
  • Take your mind off worries. Exercise is a distraction that can get you away from the cycle of negative thoughts that feed anxiety and depression.
  • Get more social. Exercise may give you the chance to meet or socialize with others. Just exchanging a friendly smile or greeting as you walk into The Studio (MDR) can boost your mood.
  • Cope in a healthy way. Doing something positive to manage anxiety or depression is a healthy coping strategy. Trying to feel better by drinking alcohol, dwelling on how badly you feel, or hoping anxiety or depression will go away on its own can lead to worsening symptoms.

So, my Studio (MDR) family, let’s give ourselves a collective reality check. I’d love for each and every one of us to privately assess our current mental state and answer a couple hard questions: “Am I okay? Do I like myself?” If the answer is “no” to either one of those questions, then set a course of action that includes exercise and make an appointment for counseling. Then, do the best deed ever: Pose the same questions to your family, friends, and loved ones. And be there for them as you let them know that you care about them and want to help.

Let’s MAKE A DIFFERENCE in a whole new set of ways.  See you at The Studio (MDR), where we’re building state-of-the-art minds to accompany our state-of-the-art bodies.

An extra hug,

Lisa
